2006 Donation Stories


Joey Mayer recieved a lung transplant Thursday September 6, 2007. The surgery went great and Joey is doing incredibly well. The transplant could not have come at a better time for Joey's health had really declined this past summer. Joey is an extraordinary, courageous young man and his parents and brother are remarkable people. This transplant was indeed a gift and absolute miracle for this family.

18-year-old Joey suffers from cystic fibrosis and must use oxygen tanks 24-hours a day. Joey recently graduated from high school. He lives in New Lenox with his parents and siblings. Joey is waiting for a double lung transplant.






Rory Guerra
Rory Guerra 56-year-old Rory works to help the Latino community in many ways, including helping youth leave gangs in his Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago. Rory is waiting for a liver transplant.






Donor Commercial’s David Redwanc Loses Battle Waiting For Kidney
Naperville resident David Redwanc, 31, featured in the Secretary of State’s organ/tissue donor television commercial which has been running since March 2006, recently died while waiting for a kidney. David, on the list while filming the commercial, was optimistic he would receive his transplant in time. Sadly, he died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood from lung complications on June 23. He had received a double lung transplant in 1998 at Loyola, having suffered from cystic fibrosis since age 9. Donor staff recently held an employee donor awareness day and employee donor drive at David’s former employer, First American Title Insurance Company in Warrenville, in honor of David. David’s wife, Sandy; mother, Kathy Hutson; and brother, Tony, also work at the company.

The 31-year-old former salesman lives in Naperville with his wife Sandy. David received a double lung transplant in the late 80s. Now he is waiting for a kidney.







Lisa Petrilli recently received a kidney transplant from a living, un-related donor who heard about Lisa's need through mutual church contacts. Lisa says that the transplant went well and she feels blessed and very healthy. She and her donor not only share a special bond, but enjoy a new, wonderful friendship. Lisa says that her donor couldn't be happier and has experienced many unexpected good things since she decided to donate!

39-year-old Lisa lives in Lake Barrington with her husband and daughters, aged five and seven. The stay-at-home mom has been waiting for a kidney since June 2005.







Corinne Roche underwent a successful kidney transplant on October 23!
She is feeling better than ever and looking forward to exploring new horizons by traveling and going away to college. Corinne's mom, Jeanne says that their family is so thankful for Corinne receiving her lifesaving kidney transplant.

16-year-old Corinne is a high school varsity cheerleader. The daughter of an African-American father and a Caucasian mother, Corrine lives in suburban St. Charles with her mother and two younger brothers. Corrine is waiting for a kidney.






UPDATE

Destinee Sorlie is nearly two years post-transplant!
Destinee is enjoying all the fun that little girls her age should - thanks to her successful liver transplant. Her health has been improving so much that her doctors have even taken her off of the steroid anti-rejection medication. Jessika Hogan said that her daughter's recovery hasn't been without its challenges, but little Destinee handled everything with courage and strength. "She is absolutely a wonderful person and she has amazed me time and time again. I feel so blessed to have her as my daughter!"

Five-year-old Destinee is the child of a mixed-race Mexican father and a Caucasian mother. Destinee lives in DesPlaines with mother Jessika Hogan and stepfather David Torres. She has been waiting for a liver since February 2006.






Catherine Simmons

51-year-old Catherine is an African-American mother of two grown children and grandmother of two. A registered nurse who cares for stroke patients, Catherine is waiting for her second kidney transplant. She lives in Country Club Hills.
